Take a look at this weird thing, which was located near the Visitor Center at Organ Pipe. I asked a Ranger what it was, and she remarked that she’d never even seen it. Looks like some kind of seismic measuring device? Can anyone shed some light on this?
I have no idea other than what others have suggested.

Think I’m going to pursue this and get a definitive answer. It’s one of those things I just can’t quite let go of.

It is a contemporary sculpture incorporating wind chimes and indigenous people’s dream catchers conceived to provide a visual, aural and tactile experience for Midwest traveler sensibilities.

Thanks, Liz. For me, this confirms (sort of) our thinking that it is some sort of a seismic activity indicator. But, was it making a racket because of the wind, or was there an earthquake happening as I was taking the video? The questions continue….

Perhaps the wind chimes and cage are meant to keep birds or large mammals away so the device isn’t damaged.
