Hair of the Dog

What a great way to begin 2013.  We joined about 150 other cyclists for the annual Hair of the Dog ride in Grand Rapids.  Cold and gray?  Who cares?

Our fearless leader Jeff Jacoby led us down alleys, over cobblestones, alongside RR tracks, up hills, on trails, and across parks.  Impassible?  Nah, not really.  We descended on two pubs midride and were greeted with varying degrees of welcome.

An important part (for me) of this adventure was our passage through an encampment of homeless folks.  We all brought donations of clothing, food, and household items to help with winter survival.  The people living out here are so resilient – it’s amazing and humbling to realize that many of the riders had bicycles that exceeded the yearly income of the inhabitants.

It was cold and icy.  I fell twice, showcasing my superb bike-handling abilities under all surface conditions.  Lovely banged-up knees and unusual skin colors are my badge of completion for this ride.IMG_2067

We finished with bike club friends at Woods – a downtown pub for yet more beer, heat, and food.

We didn’t make or break any resolutions so far this year.  Hoping these are the last times in 2013 that I’ll have to pick myself up off the pavement.

So, what are you thinking?
